Winter tree planting

The backbone to much garden design and most planting schemes are trees.....which is why we love the winter.

Winter - when deciduous trees have lost their leaves and are dormant - is a great time to plant them.

Firstly, they are cheaper as they haven't had to be looked after and watered in a nursery. Instead they have been grown in a field and dug up only once dormant and when needed.

Secondly, they are more sustainable - they have not been watered artificially in the nursery but naturally (by rain) in the field and they are sold 'bare-root' (i.e. not in pots) so are lighter to transport (and therefore have a lower carbon footprint).

And

Thirdly, if planted before Christmas they should get established sufficiently over the winter so you don't have to water them much in the summer (although you do need to keep an eye on them in hot weather) - unlike spring and summer planted trees that will be vulnerable.

So all in all a good idea.
