Nation's Favourite Wildflower

The conservation organisation Plantlife has launched a survey to identify the Nations favourite wild flower, as part of its 25th anniversary.

Over the winter, 25 plants were shortlisted by Plantlife members and the list is now available to see on their website. There is information about the plants, including their conservation status and cultural significance, and it is also possible to see how the voting is going in the different parts of the UK.

Marian Spain, the charities Chief Executive said there was a serious side to this public vote: “Wild flowers hold a special place in our hearts but we often take them for granted. One in five of Britain’s wild flowers is under threat and across our counties they are disappearing year in, year out. By casting a vote, you’ll be making it clear that you want to help us to keep the colour in the countryside.”

The new Vice President of Plantlife, Rachel de Thame, said she found it very difficult to choose between so many favourites but plumped for the snake’s head fritillary for its “shy beauty and simple elegance”. She hopes that the survey will highlight the fact that many wild flowers are slowly disappearing and that efforts need to be made to halt the decline.

Plantlife expert, Dr. Trevor Dines, said he loved the shortlist produced by Plantlife members because it is a bit bonkers but “perfectly reflects our countryside and our relationship with it.”

The closing date to cast your vote is 11 June. You can vote here.
