Designing sustainable gardens

This is an article I wrote for the Garden Design Journal. It was published in the November 2015 edition. It discusses some of the issues around designing sustainable gardens - something that many garden designers, their clients and garden owners in general probably aspire to but which is perhaps not so easy to put into practice.

RHS prepares to meet future challenges

The RHS announced its new science strategy, at the annual John Macleod Lecture which took place at RHS Lindley Hall on 29 October . The focus of the five-year plan is addressing the horticultural and societal challenges posed by climate change and the impact of new pests and diseases.

Echinacea

You may have been coveting your neighbour's echinacea a short while back. If so, here is a reminder of just how beautiful they are so you can get some in the ground for next year. I spotted this lot in the RHS trial beds at Wisley last year.

The right to roam

As the garden ripens, the temptation to cut down those tatty old stems can be hard to resist. Apart from the fact that many seed-heads are beautifully architectural and provide a valuable winter larder for birds, there's another reason to hold on to your secateurs....the self-seeders.
